Malaysia to discuss with Asean partners on Spratly issue

BEAUFORT: The Malaysian government will hold a forum and discussion with other Asean member countries on the issue of the duplicating claims on the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said this following the recent statement by China repeating its exclusive claim on the islands and the waters surrounding them in the South China Sea.
"The settlement on the Spratly Islands issue is between the governments of China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.
"However, due to the absence of effective negotiations, the countries that had the right on the islands could not be determined," he said after handing over the 1Malaysia Computers and opening the delegates meeting of the Kimanis Umno division at the Dewan SMK Membakut, near here.
The Spratly islands are made up of more than 100 small islands or atolls located in the middle of the South China Sea, near Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, China and Brunei. - Bernama
